Bedrooms in a small apartment in an apartment building or in a historic apartment building that is difficult to equip, often, in addition to sleeping and resting, serve as storage or workplace. So how do you fit a comfortable bed, desk, wardrobe, or chest of drawers in it? How to decorate the aesthetic and functional interior of a narrow bedroom?
Narrow Bedroom: How to Arrange the Bed
A bedroom with a glass wall is a good solution for narrow rooms. The all-glass transparent wall will optically enlarge the room, and another room will be visible behind it. The blinds installed can be covered in the evening when you need silence and cut off from the outside world.
The bed, the most crucial piece of furniture in a bedroom, and especially in a narrow bedroom – because it is often the only freestanding piece of furniture that can fit in a small room – can be placed in the center of a space or along a long wall just below it. In a bedroom for two, the bed is best placed in the center so that you can freely approach it from both sides.
Don’t worry about leaving a little room in front of the bed for a walk. It can be a narrow space of up to 40 cm if you walk through it without leaning on the wall or mattress. This bed arrangement saves valuable space for placing a nightstand, wardrobe, or chest of drawers to the side of the bed. A bed is a low piece of furniture that does not constrain or obscure the space below eye level.
The bed is best placed directly under the window in a small narrow bedroom with a beautiful window and a beautiful view. However, when there is no place to put the bed in the middle of the room, then it remains to place against the wall. If the room has a window with a beautiful view, it will be more interesting to put furniture under it so that in the morning, when you wake up, you have a lovely idea, and you feel suitable for the day ahead. A radiator under the window, which, however, should not be covered with any furniture, can complicate the task. Then it is best to move the bed slightly away from the radiator to ensure adequate circulation of warm air during the heating season. By placing furniture perpendicular to a long wall, we can also put at least one side of the bedside table.
Whether you place the bed in the middle of the room or against one of its walls, you should choose the model that is as narrow as possible so that it does not obstruct access to other furniture or windows. Its location may depend on whether the bedroom will be a resting place or a multifunctional space. Therefore, if there is also a desk in the room, let’s allocate space by the window. Then we can work in daylight. The bed next to her, or rather her headboard, separated us from the sleeping area from the working area.
Bed for a Narrow Bedroom
A dark, expressive headboard made of panels upholstered in the soft fabric creates an interesting arrangement, enhances the room’s acoustics, and visually elevates the space.
Another critical point is a bed for a narrow bedroom. It is worth choosing models with the thinnest possible frame around the mattress, which does not take up precious centimeters. The best models for really narrow bedrooms are mattresses without sides, the legs tightly pressed against the frame on which the mattress locates. At the head of such a bed, you can install a high, up to the ceiling, decorative, soft headboard, emphasizing the importance of the furniture and optically “raise” the room.
Beds that resemble continental beds also fit perfectly into a narrow bedroom. Because they do not have a frame around the mattress, and we can place it on special boxes, we save even a dozen centimeters in the width and length of the bed. In addition, these types of mattresses have a built-in bedding bin, which provides additional storage space – which, as you know, is never too much.
If the bed is the only piece of furniture in the bedroom, a roomy chest of drawers under a raised mattress will be valuable additional storage space. It will help store bedding, pillows, rugs, or less used items or clothing.
Narrow Bedroom and Dressing Room

Usually, you need to store a little more things in the bedroom than a spare set of bedding. The elegant dresser will provide ample storage space for pajamas, blankets, or underwear. It also gives us extra space for flowers, decorations, or a handy bookcase placed on its countertop. The chest of drawers is conducive to change – it is easy to move it and change the room’s location in the shortest possible time. So that the massive form of furniture does not dominate the space, it is worth taking care of the details – delicate handles or slender high legs.
If there are not enough drawers, the solution would be a sliding wardrobe with sliding doors. Instead of the version with hinged doors, this model gives us additional space – the distance from the bed can be less, and the furniture itself is deeper and more spacious.
A built-in or free-standing wardrobe is a large size that covers the space, so we should position it to be as unobtrusive as possible. However, if this is not possible, you have to sacrifice one of the sidewalls of the bedroom, and then the best solution would be a wardrobe with sliding doors, which is easier to handle in a narrow bedroom than with hinged doors. The wardrobe facades’ thoughtful design and color scheme will decorate the whole room – more durable than paint or wallpaper. Mirrored doors, in turn, will visually enlarge the interior.
Narrow Bedroom in the Attic

If our small bedroom is located in an attic, tilting the space can be quite a challenge. A high knee wall is a good place to put your headboard next to it. If the knee wall is not too high, and you are afraid to hit your head on the roof surface while sitting on the bed, you should think about developing this place with cabinets with shelves, which, unfortunately, will have to be bent, but they will not take up a very functional home.
Tilting an attic doesn’t mean giving up storage space the size of a wardrobe. We should order oversized storage furniture by height from the carpenter and companies specializing in cabinets and closets. In the case of large, custom-made warehouses, the correct interior design of the wardrobe is the key to success. Therefore, you need to think in advance about what you want to store in the bedroom. The wardrobe area, hidden behind the lowest door, just below the roof slope, can keep hanging items. And the next vertical wardrobe racks can be easily equipped with traditional drawers and shelves.
Narrow Bedroom Inspiration
Supporters of saturated colors can successfully use a dark muted shade of blue in the bedroom. This color creates an atmosphere of calm and stabilization, which is essential for effective regeneration. Smaller or larger accents in blue will look great when paired with gold, silver, or black. You should always keep in mind the details that matter, especially in a small room. The choice of flooring, fabrics, or wallpaper affects the acoustics, mood, and room temperature.
In the bedroom, we should pay special attention to curtains hung on the window, creating a large decorative surface. It is good to choose them in color close to the color of the walls or neutral, pastel colors so that they do not become dominant in a small room. The bed and possibly the location of the headboard should dominate the bedroom.
Instead of being decorative, dramatic, upholstered with a headboard, we can also decorate the wall above the bed with wallpaper, painted in a different color from the rest of the room, or with posters, paintings, or tapestries. It’s best to pair them with your interior design and color scheme, so they don’t get too flashy.
Decorative lighting in sconces or lamps on the bedside table is an indispensable decoration in the bedroom, giving a cozy atmosphere. A dark shade will reduce harsh light, while a bright shade comes in handy if you need adequate lighting for reading. In this case, you should avoid lamps suspended in the center above the bed in the middle of the room. Better to put two lights on the ceiling, on the sides of the bed.
