Bed Bug Bites vs. Mosquito Bites
Parasites that live on the outer surface of the host are called ectoparasites. Mosquito and bed bugs are the same ectoparasitic insects of mammals and humans. Both are blood parasites.
Bed Bug Bite
The bed bug is an apple seed-shaped insect that prefers to live in enclosed spaces such as beds and crevices on the house floor. These areas should locate near the places where warm-blooded animals sleep. Newly hatched bed bug nymphs are colorless and have a translucent exoskeleton. They went through four stages of molting to become adults. Adults will be red after eating. Bed bugs feed at night when host mammals/humans are sleeping. They pierce the skin with an elongated beak or stylet tuft. It consists of a long upper jaw, lower jaw, and lips. The edges of the upper jaw, lower jaws have changed to form sharp edges, except for the right upper jaw, which has a hooked end. In the future, the maxillary bones grow together, creating a channel for food and saliva. The points pierce the skin, and the hook, like the lower jaw, attaches the beak to the skin. The left jaw cuts the tissue back and forth to reach the blood vessel. The blood is then drawn into the mouth through the alimentary canal using the lips. The bite can cause itchy red scars and spots. Although they carry 24 known human pathogens, they do not transmit from humans or humans.
Mosquito Bite
The mosquito is also a mammalian blood-sucking insect. But first of all, they feed on plant juices and nectar. Female mosquitoes feed on mammalian blood as they need additional proteins and minerals. Female mosquitoes detect their host by organic matter such as carbon dioxide, sweat, body odor, lactic acid, and heat. They have a part of the mouth called the beak. Diseases such as yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya, malaria, and West Nile virus spread through this vector.
What is the Difference Between a Bed Bug Bite and Mosquito Bite?
- Bedbug and mosquito bites are similar in many ways. The bite always occurs in warm-blooded mammalian hosts. The parasite is mainly attracted by heat and organic matter such as CO2 in the host’s body.
- Both bites cause itching, redness, swelling, and blemishes. It will also cause blood loss in the host.
- The mode of sucking blood is similar; both parasites use their upper jaws to cut open the host’s skin and attach other parts of the mouth to the host. They also use their lip to draw blood into their mouth.
- But the mosquito injects the host with an anticoagulant containing saliva, but the bed bug does not. This saliva can contain many viruses and parasites that can cause disease, making mosquitoes a disease vector. The bed bug does not transmit disease to humans or mammals.
- Mosquitoes feed mainly on crepuscular ones and are also active at night. But the bed bug bites only at night when the owners are sleeping.
- Although both male and female bed bugs feed on humans, unlike a single female feeding on the part of the mosquito, it should note that the mosquito bite is more harmful to the host.
